Abstract

The first diagnosis of ovine toxoplasmic abortion outbreak in Uruguay, during the lambing season in 1983, is described. Nine fetuses from 500 ewes, aborted by the end of the second third of the gestation period, are recovered.

Diagnosis wes established according to typical macroscopic cotiledonary damage, placentary histopathology, isolation of T. Gondii from cotyledons, observation of the protozoa in fetal brain tissue, typical fetal brain histopathology, and specific immunological behavior of the flock. No other abortive pathogens were found.

During winter, the flock sought shelter in a Wood in habited by many roaming domestic and feral cats. This circumstance is considered of epizootic value.
