The lecturer rcviews the advances made in thc knowledge and control of severa! infectious diseases of poultry, such as pullorum diseases, fowl typhoid, leukosis and the virus discases of thc respiratory tract. He examines the sanitary situation of our aviculture and discusses the most adequate procedures to employ in the control of the infectious discases that are prevalent in Uruguay and to prevent thc exotic ones.
Pullorum disease.— He informs about the achievements attained in the United States in the control of this diseases and requires that a national control programme be established in Uruguay. The problem originated by the form variants of S. pullorum is reviewed and the therapeutic action of the sulpha durgs is reported. He reports also on the isolation of the variant strain of S. pullorum in Uruguay.
Fowl typhoid.— This is the infection that causes the largest losses in our poultry. The control of thc discases by vaccination and by agglutination test and slaughter are discussed. The conclusión is that the control of pullorum discase and fowl typhoid must be undertaken simultaneously.
Leukosis.— The newly acquired knowledge about the etiology and the means or propagation of the discase is reviewed. It is stated that there is no available procedure for thc eradication of the disease.
Virus diseases of the respiratory tract.— Infectious laryngotracheitis was recognized in Uruguay, in 1948. Newcastle disease and infectious bronchitis were not reported in this country. Preventive mensures to bar out Newcastle disease from Uruguay are required.
