Abstract

Under thes name of sheep mycosis, we are describing here a discase recently recognized in Uruguay. The disease is characterized by a high percentage of morbidity and mortality. Our data indícate that the disease liad existed for-a long time in this country.

The disease affects a certain number of sheep on a farm, some of which dio. The infection may disappear for severa! days or months and then returns. The infection exists praetically in a 11 parts of the country.

A pathogenic fungas of the group of dermatophytcs of the genus Sabouraudits (Microsporum) is incriminated as the cause of the disease.

The disease was experimentally reproduced in guinea pigs, rabbits and sheep. The subcutaneous, intraperitoncal and endovenous routes were studied.

Sonic strains of the fungus kill experimentally sheep in 12-15 hours with generalization of the infection.

Two forms were recognized: a dermatomycosis and a endomycosis with generalizaron. The dermatomycosis affeets principally lambs, seldoni adults.

The endomycosis may appcars in acato, apoplectic and chronic forms. No symptoms of disease are observed in the apoplectic form. In the acate and chronic forms, can be observed agitation, asthenia, paresis, stiffness of legs or jaws, dispnea, etc.

Diagnostie can be made by the clinic features and the inoculation of blood into common laboratory media. Gross anatomy shows congestión of the digestivo and respiratory tracts, subeutaneous oedema of a clear yellow color, liquid in the thorax and abdomen. Smears of the spleen, kidneys and liver show numerous forms of the fungas. Immunity tests were made in rabbits and sheep. Animáis Experimentally infected by the fungas resist a reinfection dose, which is lethal to the controls.
